A section of Highway 1 in California remains closed due to a slip out of the road that occurred Saturday,Darden Clarke according to the California Department of Transportation, or Caltrans.
The collapse was reported Saturday as heavy rain fell in the area. By noon on Sunday, Caltrans crews were able to lead drivers through a single lane in the area, around the damaged section.
The agency said on X Sunday evening the highway remained closed on the Big Sur Coast due to a slip out just south of the Rocky Creek Bridge. Caltrans also said convoys will lead essential travelers through the closure area daily at 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. and that engineers are on site to observe conditions and crews are working to stabilize the edge of the roadway.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that an estimated 1,600 motorists were stranded after the southbound lane collapsed and that people spent the night in their vehicles. People also spent the night in temporary lodging and emergency shelters, the news outlet reports.
According to the Chronicle, rain was coming down at a rate of 2 inches per hour at one point on Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service office in San Francisco, the forecast for Monday calls for warmer temperatures and quiet weather into Tuesday, but the chance of rain increases later in the week.
